IN STORES NOW#17: WINDOW SEATS
by Will McConnell
Bandwidth’s much loved In Stores Now format has a near-fatal flaw. Stores – “shops” as they are also known – are said to open around the hours of 9am til around 5 or 6 pm. They do not often open around the hours of midnight on a freezing September tuesday. But no matter. Window Seats were not to be put off. They had new material to premier and nothing would stop them.
Its moments like this when the whole series seems to work – music in its purest form, embryonic, newly written material, reduced to a single acoustic guitar with only a shaker, a guitar case and a pair of keys for percussion – performed probably just as it was written (without the pair of keys, I’d imagine. Who knows?). The sound of three musicians with the entire town to themselves. Pure brilliance.
If you like what you hear – or even if you don’t and you want to turn up and throw broken bottles – Window Seats play Lavery’s Bunker in Belfast on 25 October – and again in the same spot on 11th November, where they’ll be trying out some more new material.
