Bandwidth Sessions#9: Fight Like Apes

by Will McConnell

Time for breath. The music scene in Northern Ireland has been more than a little caught up by its own success lately, what with these guys, and them, not to mention them.

Time for a reminder, if a reminder were needed, of a band who did it first, better and with cooler. We’ve had The National on this site from New York and Seu Jorge from Rio de Janeiro, but this is the first time Bandwidth has ventured as far as Dublin – and we’re proud to present you their finest sons (and daughter) – Fight Like Apes

Well.. except that it was actually Fight Like Apes who ventured here. Here to be precise, for a session with BBC Radio 1 in Northern Ireland. Bandwidth followers who may remember this session from rock Gods Therapy? may know about the awesome overwhelming size of the Blackstaff studios in Belfast. Whereas Therapy?’s set filled the whole size of the space, ringing the rafters out of the roof – this was a whole different, intimate kind of experience. I nearly forgot where I was for a second – and hopefully that impression comes across on video, in a good way..

Currently on a never-ever ending tour of the UK and Ireland – and fresh from a lot more radio coverage playing Camden Crawl 2009 – the remarkably non-belligerent simian band will be back in Belfast on 22 June supporting Kasabian in St George’s Market (!?). Go them. And pick me up a bag of apples.
